Conclusion

The Nikon D5100 has gained a lot of improvements compared to its predecessor, the Nikon D5000, and sits perfectly between the Nikon 3100 and the Nikon D7000, combining the ease of use of the D3100 and the image quality of the D7000. Although the D5100 is not the best digital SLR camera in its class in terms of speed, it is in the other hand a very impressive digital SLR camera when it comes to image quality. Delivering much better results than those of other entry-level digital SLR cameras in its class, the D5100’s image quality is comparable to that of the higher-end D7000. Particularly at high ISO settings, the D5100 shows its superiority by delivering some of the best image quality that we’ve ever seen from a DX-format/APS-C digital SLR camera.

Overall, the Nikon D5100 is definitely one of the best entry-level digital SLR cameras on the market today. With the D5100, Nikon is aiming novice photographers who want to pursue photography more seriously. The D5100’s closest competitor is of course the Canon EOS Rebel T3i, which has been introduced earlier on the market. If you are looking for an excellent entry-level digital SLR camera and willing to compromise a little on shooting speed for the sake of image quality, you should choose the D5100 over the T3i. If operational speed is your concern, you will be better served by the T3i.
